Toyota Name
From Faq
Toyota orginally started in September 1933 when Toyoda Automatic Loom began a division specifically devoted to vehicles. In 1937 Toyota Motor Co. was established and replaced the family name, Toyoda, with Toyota. The name was changed for three major reasons:
- Simplify the pronunciation
- Signify the seperation of the founder's work life from home life
- Give the company an auspicious beginning. Toyota (トヨタ) is considered luckier than Toyoda (豊田) in Japan, where eight is regarded as a lucky number, and eight is the number of strokes it takes to write Toyota.
Note that Toyoda Machine Works, Ltd. is an actual company. This is the reason that many power steering pumps on trucks from the 1980s have Toyoda stamped on them.
