TRD Supercharger Installation

The TRD Supercharger was designed for use on the 3.4-liter V6 engine on 97+ model year Tacomas. It provides a maximum gain of 75 hp and 77 lb. of torque; it does this with a maximum of 6 psi. boost. The supercharger is very well worth the money, whether you're building a street rod or off-road machine!!

OK, you're saying, "but I have a 95 or 96 - what can I do?" This FAQ will provide information for you to be able and have a supercharger that runs correctly.

Is it worth it?

- YES!

Why doesn't TRD recommend the supercharger for 95-96 models?

- The reason they are not recommending the supercharger for 95-96 years is because the truck's commputer (ECM) can not deal with the fact that there is not enough fuel. What happens is the ECM tries to fix the problem by retarding the timing. (It does this so much that you want gets as much of a HP gain.) Another reason is the ECM has two operating modes, open & closed loop. The ECM stays in "closed loop" when the truck is under about 80% throttle. It does this by changing the air/fuel mixture from rich-lean-rich-lean, to save gas. Once the throttle is opened more than about 80% it goes into open loop where the air/fuel mixture stays at its maximum efficiency. Since there is not enough fuel under full throttle; the 95-96 years will not go into open loop with the supercharger which robs the HP. To correct this problem see, Fuel Modifications below.

What fuel modification should I do to make it run right?

- To supply your supercharger with enough fuel, there are several options to consider:
  • First, if you plan on keeping it stock (as in stock air flow meter, supercharger, headers, and exhaust), then install 270cc injectors from RC Engineering or 305cc injectors from Toyota (part number 23209-46031):
  • The 270cc injectors are big enough to handle this setup with out the Boost-a-pump (FMU), but they require new connectors to install them.
  • The 305cc injectors will also work, but can be installed in the stock connectors.
  • You can use a Split Second unit called the ARC1 to control either the 270cc or 305cc injectors.

What about adding a 3-3.5" MAF and the 8psi pulley?

- This requires a completely different setup:
  • First, you will need the Split Second unit called the ARC2, because the ARC1 will not work with the MAF.
  • Next, you will need at least 305cc injectors the same as before. If you use the 305cc injectors you will have surging, which can also be cured by the SS unit ESC1.
  • The recommended size is 380cc injectors, which will also fit the stock connectors, and do not require the ESC1 because it shouldn't surge.

To set all of this up you will need an air/fuel gauge!!!

How do I hook the boost port to the Fuel Pressure Regulator (FPR)?

There are many accessories available for the Supercharged V6 to make it even more powerful:

  • Headers
  • Spark plug wires
  • Smaller pulley
  • Exhaust
  • Reprogramming of the ECM
