READ FIRST!! Before beginning the process(es) described in this article, please read all the instructions/information presented before making the modification(s) detailed herein. Ensure you have all the necessary materials, tools, and anything else required to perform the process(es). If you do not understand any of the steps, contact the submitter listed at the end of the article. Tools/Supplies:
- Phillips Head Screwdriver
- Needle Nose Pliers (or similar)
- 10mm Socket or Wrench
Steps:
1. Remove the passenger side front wheel molding (or flare) by removing the screws.
2. Remove the screws that attach the inner fender liner (plastic) and carefully remove the plastic clips that hold the rest of the inner fender in place. I believe there are five clips, three in front and two around the top. You can reach behind them and squeeze them to remove them, but a couple of them are in pretty tight spaces. If you have big hands, like me, you might have to improvise with needle nose pliers or something.
3. Once you've gotten the inner fender liner to drop (it needn't be removed completely), you can see the snorkel. There are two or three 10mm bolts holding it in place. Once the snorkel is removed, reinstall the fender liner and molding/flare.
Proceed to under the hood:
4. Disassemble the air filter assembly and move the upper section aside.
5. Remove the three bolts that hold down the bottom portion, and remove it. You are left with the elbow still bolted to the fender bulkhead. Remove the two 10mm bolts from the elbow and remove it.
6. Reinstall the air box and you're done.
Another alternative that many have chosen to do is the Deckplate Modification, which allows you to keep your factory snorkel by installing a marine deckplate in the front of the air box. See the article in the Air Intake Modifications section for more information on this procedure.
WARNING! Removing your snorkel increases the risk of sucking water through your intake resulting in hydrolock.
