Custom Snorkel Installation
From Faq
Here is the snorkel I recently added to my rig. It was mostly constructed from 3" PVC fittings. I didn't want to pay the $200 price tag on the aftermarket brands and quite frankly I did not like the way they ran up the windshield frame. So, after seeing a similar snorkel install like this done, I decided to go ahead and go this route...which was take the snorkel out through the hood. Total cost of the contruction of this unit was less than $30 and all the parts were obtained from the local hardware store. The following photo is the stack. The air intake on top of the stack is nothing more than a 6" PVC pipe cap reduced down to fit the 3" PVC mail adapter. The rubber fitting at the base of the stack is the rubber grommet off of a roof flashing kit to cover the 3" hole that was cut into the hood. I slapped an ARB sticker on it to make it look real professional!
The next photo is an overhead view of where the stack screws into under the hood. A 3" PVC female adapter was mounted directly under the 3" hole that was cut into the hood and piped out of the engine bay by cutting another 3" hole through the inner fender to where the factory snorkel resides using two 3" PVC 90 degree elbows. As you can see, the unit was then adapted to the existing factory snorkel with a 3"-2" rubber reducer. 3" hose clamps were used to clamp the rubber reducer and silicone was used for a nice, tight seal.
The photo below is a side view of the unit...it shows you a better view of how the fittings were tied together back to the factory snorkel. The factory snokel did have to be cut to shorten the length of it so the 90 degree elbow could tie into it.
This last picture of the install shows you were the 3" hole was cut into the hood. It did take many, many times of opening and closing the hood to make sure the hole was cut directly over the 3" female adapter. Also, the 3" hole that was cut into the inner fender to gain access into the engine bay was a little tricky, but after analyzing the situation (scratching the old noggin!) it was figured out.
