When you are done smashing your computer in anger, learn about the National Forest Route Designation project and get involved. We are losing trails right now as you are reading this!

Call me blonde but it is hard to find information on there where I can help. Most of the stuff I'm pulling up has 2005 on it.

I was thinking of going to one of the meetings that Wes pointed out (Folsom). Anyone else going?

I'm going to the Pleasant Hill meeting. Here's a good place to learn about the route designation process.

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=596279

Eldorado National Forest is ahead of the others, but ALL forests are going through the same process, so no matter where you recreate, you should be aware of what's going on.

I was thinking of going to Placerville, but I may hold out until the Folsom night since its closer.
I've been to these before and I'm pretty new here so yes, it will be really hard for folks that don't know alot of trails to speak up for specific trails but everybody keeps saying that people showing up counts big and if nothing else you get to hear alot of people's opinion about trails that DO know these areas extremely well. I thought it was really interesting, and furthered my opinion that the FS people on the ground are ultimately concerned about the Forest, but their bosses up in FS Corporate are likely operating more in their own, rather than the Forest's, best interests. These meetings may or may not get anything done, but anybody that is trying to learn about the process will get a HUGE insight by attending.

It's my understanding that these meetings are mainly to learn about the route designation process and how to properly respond in writing during the 45 day public input period. That's when we get to ask for trails to be kept open and on the map.

Don't know Mike. I saw this on the creeper or whatever board:
http://www.calcreepers.com/viewtopic.php?p=7904#7904

I think the FS will definately be represented at the other meetings, but if it goes anything like the ones I've been to in the past it is really more of an informational/ "this is what we had in mind- this is what we thought you meant" kind of thing.
Not really sure who is putting on the Aug11 meet up, references pirate though for whatever its worth.

I'm going to make the 8/2 Pleasant Hill meeting. I'll probably leave work early to make it on time.

One more meeting left for the bay area folks. This is happening this Thurs. Appears there will be a good showing, arriving early might not be a bad idea... hope to see ya'll there! This is very important, let's all help keep our trails open and remain educated on the current situations

WITH THE FS UNDER COURT ORDER, WE HAVE UNTIL SEPTEMBER 4TH TO GET IN OUR COMMENTS ON trails in ELDO!!!!! We need to get ahold of all Forest maps and look at routes in other forests as well.

You can find the route numbers for Eldorado NF under app.F Alt.D routes and cross reference them to map 12 here:
http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/eldorado/projects/...eis/index.shtml

All of California's National forests are listed here: A similar form to the one below can be sent to any of the National Forests whose addresses can be found on their respective web sites.
http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/forests.html

for Eldorado Forest: PRINT THIS OUT, FILL IT OUT, AND SEND IT IN!!!!

A motorcycle friend of mine says the program is flawed for us (4x4 folk) because the time to have spoke up for desired trails was last year when they were drafting up the maps, not now that the maps are already made. He (Motorcycle friend) says he and several from his trail riding group attended several meetings last year to help create the maps and talk about their favorite riding spots and are only loosing 1 trail on this new map "Alt. D . I'd like to think we're organized enough to make a big impact, but this is a big ball to have been dropped . The fire we went to last month's meetings with SHOULD HAVE BEEN harnessed last year when our requests would have counted and they were designing the maps. Am I missing something here? It seems to me that we (Cal 4Wheel members, Blue Ribbon Coalition members, at least) should have received a heads up to this trail planning a year ago when we could have made a difference (not that we didn't in last few weeks). I caught wind of these meetings from the Pirate4x4 board. Kudos to all who attended the meetings over the last few months, but I think we as wheelers need to be able to rely on those who have their fingers in the political arena to keep us apprised of the goings on in our backyards... and get more involved in the political arenas ourselves. I'll be the first to admit when I'm wrong, and I'd love to prove my motorcyclist friend wrong, but I get the feeling he's right. Can somebody clarify for me, please?

I apploigize for the misinformation I gave above about the rest of the state of California's DEIS route designation deadline being Sept 4th as well. This is not in fact true. I was mistakenly told such by a friend, and like to err on the side of getting the word out. The other National Forests have their own programs they are going thru and are at various stages in the process. Most are going to be completed in 2008. Eldorado NF was the one sued, and the one with court order to be finished by December 2007.

It seems to me we need to get on the ball and find out when the other NF's meetings for map design are and get to those. Let's not wait until the maps are already made.
