Default Swing Tire Gate Thingy by A.J. @ Bentup

What am I supposed to call this, a tire gate, swing gate or what? Anyway thought I would start a new thread since this is really a different subject than the rear bumper itself which A.J. also made. A.J. did great work, as usual. Here's the pic's-

Here's what I managed to get done while A.J. was busy welding -

Solid as a rock. To say A.J. builds things solid would be an huge understatement.

nice, very nice. how do you like the ARE shell? i see that it doesnt completely cover the bed. is it a topper that is specifically made for the short bed? just wondering because i have seen other ARE's and they completely cover the sides. I am looking to go the same route as far as topper options with the flip out sides.

I like it a lot, very good quality and workmanship.

Covers the bed perfectly and yes it is specifically made for the regular bed Tacoma. The double cabs are the only model I know of with "short" and/or regular sized beds. AFAIK, Access Cabs (such as mine) only get the regular size bed.

Anyway, I didn't want the style that completely covered the bed rails. Makes the truck look to much like an SUV and the bottom edges of the shell sticks out a little on those kind in order to cover the plastic bed rail. IMO, that style looked like crap on the truck in real life when I did a test fit to see which one I wanted.

I highly recommend the "Windoors" as ARE calls them. I use them everyday.

I'm curious if the latch can even lock at that angle. They are designed to latch at a 90 deg angle if so no catch is necessary.

Is that catch the only thing holding the end of the swing out to the bumper? If so I would add a spring loaded pin like I see on the other side that has a good, long throw.

What the hell are you guys talking about? The latch has a "trigger" that you have to pull in order to open the mechanism. Doesn't matter what angle it's installed at and the trigger is the safety feature. You guys must be thinking of a different latch. I'll take a better picture of it when I get home tonight.

Ok, but I'd still put some sort of safety/pin on that latch that prevents the trigger from separating...I just don't trust them. I'd also probably add a spring-loaded pin, like the other end has, mounted about 2" from the end of that bar (through the bar and into the bumper) for overkill

can you flex that can mount (with a full can) at all foreward/backward?

I'll take a picture later. I hear what you're saying and might have to do something if it doesn't hold up under trail testing but under normal use this latch would never come undone.

Nope the can is full now and with a very hard push/pull from the top of the can there is no flex at all . I'll keep my eye on the welds though.

I don't expect things to move but though I'd ask anyway.
AJ and Demello have been of the "if it can move it will break" school of thought for some time now

Nice bumper design. But I fear that it is not braced well enough.
The entire load is rearward (see your photo).

Even with that triangle brace that is mounted on the tire rack, will not prevent it from over stressing (when you start off roading). There should be a brace towards the rear side of that box tubing. Maybe you can get someone to add two more pieces of flat plate to the rear side of that tire brace - making it a sort of pyramid shape. Then do the same thing for the gas tank holder.

But then that is my humble engineering opinion.

I don't want to steal the thread, but this is how we supported my tire carrier. I've beat the shit out of this truck and even had the tire hitting the ground while backing off of a steep hill and it has held up perfectly.

Here's the latch I was referring to above, I don't see how it can come undone all by itself. Anyone experience this with the same latch?

It's braced as well or better as any bumper built with the 2x4 material laid flat, probably a little more weld area because it is on an angle. How often do you have the space to add supporting material going back toward the tailgate?

I agree with you though, since it is on an angle I do have room to add some more gussets and it would be stronger that way. Good idea!
