Question Automatic vs. Stick Shift?

I have an inquire for all you guys...I've had a Tacoma for three years (2002 4x4 2.7) I got it brand new and I love it; it hasn't dissapointed me on the various times I've gone to the Mountains in Mexico. but lately I've been thinking of parting with it. The only reason is space inside. I was thinking of trying and get a 4 door one, same thing 4x4, maybe 6 cyl. but also a 2002 or around that year. The only bad thing, or major thing stopping me is that I really like the manual on mine, and I know that the 4 door ones didn't have a Stick Shift before this year. What do you guys think of the Manual Shift Vs. Automatic...specially when off roading?

Oh no.

You'll get about a 50/50 split on this one.

Where do you drive? If you drive in a lot of stop and go traffic with a lot of stop lights, an automatic is easier to live with. And if you want to make it go fast, I think there's more potential with an auto. Otherwise, get the manual. I think it's more fun to drive and more practical. Plus, as long as you've got a hill, you never have to worry about a dead battery keeping you from getting it started.

If you wanna wheel it, get an auto..You can watch everyone else "challenge"there truck into pieces with sticks and smoking clutches and the crashes and banges that come from them "being challenged"

Unless the stick guy happens to have a crawl box. Not that I am all that against slush boxes, I have one in the FJ.

Yes, a crwler mitigates the sloppy driving of the manuals enough to have a similarity to Finnesse driving . Although a mild crawler gear in an auto would be the best of both worlds.
I like the fact that the sluch box can absorb a little bit of the shock loading.

With Marlins Toy Box bolted to the back of the T350 with a low stall converter, an Atlas T case and the portal hubs, it should poke right along. I need to come to grips with the tire size I intend to run so I can figure out what ratio to put in the diffs.

Although it might be a bit more of a challenge with a manual I beleive it is a bit more fun,and you have more control."Finnesse driving" yes that is the key with a manual in order for you not to smoke the cluch, break things, and tear the piss out of your tires, but is'nt that true with wheelin' in general? Everybody has there favorite, and I respect that, but I will always wheel' a manual. My

if you think about it, don't all the "pro" offroaders use automatics? from prerunner-rockcrawler-monster trucks.

I have a 5 speed and rarely use my clutch while negotiating an obstacle. Now everyone take a moment to bow down to Marlin....

Default Stick vs. Automatic

Thanks guys, I think I'll just stick with my xtra cab, I kind of like the manual shift too...although I've never driven an automatic...maybe I'll go in debt again and get a 2005...

I really like my stick shift...But I don't go off-road that much. I haven't had to 'crawl' over anything yet. On the other hand, I figured how to do a smooth 1-2 shift. Before I shifted at 2-3,000 and it was kinda jerky. Now I shift into 2nd at 5,000 and it's a lot smoother and the truck goes like a raped ape!

No, only when I wanna put some punk in his place. Maybe twice a day. 4,500 works as well.

So 50/50 as far as wheeling goes.. Do you live in a place where it snows? Diving an auto in the snow gives you slightly less control (which can be overcome, but with a bit of thought). When you start to slide in a stick whats your rection? Push the clutch in right? in an Auto you can't exactly do that; you can however pop it into N and achieve the same thing.

The other thing is that I have found the brakes on the autos go out faster.. which makes sense. When you go to stop a stick at a light, you push the clutch in, so that the brakes on only stopping the vehicle.. In an auto when you go to stop the wheels are still getting power through the torque converter, so you have to "fight" that, and try to stop the truck- what I am saying is that it takes more effort to stop an auto as far as brakes go.

Basically, I'm a control freak... You simply have more control with a clutch and 5-speed. Yeah, the auto is a niice brake every once in a while; but I just don't like the idea of pressing a pedal and having a computer decide exactly what you're trying to do. It is a little more of challenge off-road, and onroad for that matter (in snow mostly), but the benefits outway the finess needed IMHO.
