Default 4wd conversion

Continuation
transfercase and adapter

trany and transfercase bolted together and ready for install

almost done

4wd mount and 30" center driveshaft

finished with all the work from underneath

I started at 2pm and finished at 9:30pm. Drove it home, but still need to finish up the inside (shifter). The only problem I ran into was the speed sensor, so I will be driving around with a handheld GPS for a speedometer till I find one.

Step 2 will be spindles and diff. Need spindles with manual hubs.
Step 3 wiring everything up, and wheeling it!

CColin- Great WORK!! Nice pics and write up as well. I'm looking to do the same with my truck soon.

Wanted to ask where you found your transfer case?
And where did you pic up the 4WD shaft?

I've been looking for about 6 months for the right one for my 04 V6... I can't seem to get it though. I work overseas a lot so unable to actually go and scout the junk yards regularly.

Good luck with the build. Keep us POSTED!!!

I bought a whole setup (motor, trans, transercase) about 2 yrs ago to swap out the motor on my 94, ended up just fixin my motor, and left the whole setup in the garage. Then I bought my 03 last year and figured I should make it 4wd since All I needed was to find the stuff for the front (diff, spindles with hubs). I had a 4wd shaft but after I measured everything it was 2" short, so I posted up on here, and luckily someone had one.

Try to pm Jomentum, he might be able to help you.

you can shorten your stock prerunner shaft actually..... take it to a drive shaft shop and aske them to take 12" off i believe. jamie has some usefull info posted up about drive shaft lengths.
http://www.ttora.com/forum/showthread.php?t=63114

as for speed sensor you can just make an extention for your stock one...... prerunner's is located on the tail housing of the transmission as aposed to the 4x4 which is on the out put of the transfercase..... just make and extension and it will be fine... the other 3 wires you have on the transfercase are there just for position sensors, we never wired mine in when we put the 4x4 stuff under my prerunner.

keep up the good work man, its well worth it in the end!!!!

The prerunner speed sensor will not work on a transfer case.

Here is the prerunner speed sensor

Here is the 4wd speed sensor

But, Matt is right about the speed sensor wiring needing extending.

As for the three position sensors/switches. On the drivers side, the forward switch is the Transfer L4 Position switch. Basically, all this does is to allow the TRD e-locker engage only when the transfer case is in 4 low. The rearward switch is the Transfer Neutral Position switch. This prevents the automatic tranny from shifting into Park if the tcase is in Neutral. On the passenger side, the Transfer 4wd Position switch. When the transfer case is in a 4wd ( Hi or Low) condition, this switch energizes the ADD to engage the front axles/CV's. Someone correct me if I'm wrong....

I like that you took a different approach than just swapping in a A340F tranny with matching tcase. As I progressed through my swap, I often wondered about just replacing the rear output shaft on my A340E transmission.

Are you going with manual or ADD front end?

Keep up the work and keep us posted!

Rick

I got a ADD diff. ready to go in! Just trying to find manual hubs.
I had a tranny with cable, but my truck doesnt use cable, so went ahead and changed shafts. We have a transmission shop so it's just a everyday thing to us.

Thanks for the info to all.
I have read Jamie's thread before, good stuff too.

CColin- if your able to keep taking pics of your work in progress please do. Even if you don't post them I'd like to ask if you'd be willing to email them to me. I find pics great for references when trying to do my work. Thanks

Man, call Jonathan over at Rancho Toyota Truck Parts. He's not a sponsor over here, but he is on Pirate, I try to tell everyone I can about him. He's a hell of a guy to work w/, he knows his shit too. If he doesn't have what you need, he'll try to get it. He's a one man show counter guy, so be patient w/ him when you call b/c he'll probably take 5 more calls while he's on the phone w/ you. He knows his shit, and I've bought PLENTY of parts. Also check out carpart.com and search some junkyards in your area.

Looks great colin! I considered the swap but kept having setbacks, so I decided to hell with it and I'll buy a SA rig later.

x2 on Jonathan @ Rancho Toyota Truck Parts (MSTRecycling.com) - Thanks for the lead Wes

Tried three different Toyota Parts departments w/o any luck looking for the ADD control relay.

TRDParts4U and I must have got off on the 'wrong foot'
Champion Toyota informed me that I'd have to wait for Shannon to get back
Titus-Will had three different parts guys try to help me and none of them could even identify that a ADD Control Relay existed in the 4x4 Tacoma

Jonathan took the same information I sent to all three Toyota parts departments and found the relay on a vehicle in his inventory. I should have the relay by this weekend.....

/hijack off

Rick

Made any progress Colin?

Sweet. When I did the swap My UCA's were attached to my spindles, so I just put them on too to avoid dealign with balljoints.

That part (I already had the diff in) probably only took me 3-4 hours solo and having never done it before. I did already have the spindles + hubs cleaned up.

Get some FSM diagrams and make sure you have the washers, clips and whatever though. I had to order them from Shannon cause the dealer in town couldnt find them. Only was like 12 bucks.
