Default Where to mount CB antenna

I have a 03 Dcab with a fiberglass camper top. I'm looking for ideas on a "clean" mount. A magnetic mount would just get knocked off on my car port. i'm leaning toward the Firestik MKM2 side body mount, but the question there would be where to mount it? Or, the Firestik DS14-FG(cell look-a-like)...it would mount to the top of the camper shell towards the cab. Has anyone used either of these applications and could post pics?
I've also condidered a hood mount(left side)as well.

I like how that looks. I wonder about the grounding issue though.

My antenae while mounted to a mount connected to my bed toolbox, Is grounded to the bed.

Seem's to perform okay for not being tuned

yup, drill the hole. on the Dcabs that really seems to make a huge difference in ground plane...send/receive is way better than any other mounting...ask Mark

i'm getting ready to install a cb and antenna as well. contemplating hood/fender, tailgate jamb, or center of the bed for the antenna. Will someone:

1. someone explain grounding plane a little more to me? i have read other posts on this but I am still confused.

2.does the antenna always need to be grounded or is that just dependent on location?

also i guess the longer the antenna the stronger the signal?

I was reading this the other day
http://www.firestik.com/Tech_Docs.htm
Pretty good read..

From what I understand, Ground plane is just the fact that you have metalic surface on your truck.
Non ground plane would be a whole fiberglass RV or the like..

If your antennae has a ground wire on it, Yes it needs to be grounded.

you can google search 'ground plane, CB radio" for more detailed info but basically, you get the best send/receive, ie signal strength in/out with the antenna in the center of the metallic mass...the truck. Having the antenna on a corner will give good send/receive...for that corner...the opposite corner won't work so well. This has less to do with 'grounding' the antenna than it does the positioning of the antenna.
Some antennas are self-grounded so check the specs of whatever you are looking to buy.
No, antenna length doesn't make it any better.
Even a cheap antenna positioned correctly and tuned via an SWR meter will out perform a top quality antenna that is just stuck on the truck any ole way and not tuned

Time for Showstop's input
