Default Looking at an 01 Tundra TRD

A guy at work is selling his 01 Tundra ext. cab SR5 TRD - V8, auto, pretty much all the bells/whistles I believe. Looks to be in EXCEPTIONAL condition with no accidents/paint work. He bought it from the original owner at 60k.

It has 117k miles on it and has a matching fiberglass camper shell and Rhino bed liner.

He's asking $8800...NADA shows avg. retail at just over $11k.

Any weak points, other than brakes that I read about? Is the auto tranny an issue? Does the V8 have a timing belt???

It appears to be bone-stock.

Scott

Yes the V8 has a timing belt that should have been changed I believe around 90,000 miles but don't qoute me on the mileage interval. See if the tranny and the axles have been serviced and when. The suspension(shocks) should be starting to show some serious wear if they haven't been replaced and check to see when the last time the spark plugs were replaced too.

sounds like it was pretty well maintained the last thing I would look at is the crossmember in front of the spare tire and if it has a plastic bedliner lift it up and shine a flashlight in there to see if there is any severe rust in the bed.

Check for any major frame rot. If you find none, or only the sort of thing a wire wheel and Rust Reformer (by Rustoleum) will address, BUY BUY BUY.

I'm at 150K on an 00...plan on swapping the starter in the next year or two, it'll be ready before 150K most likely. Don't worry about the brakes, learn good braking habits, or learn good braking habits and sell the old calipers to the Tacoma guys and get the TSB calipers. I'm still on the original calipers.

Upgrade the shocks. The best solution for an everyday truck is a set of Bilstein 5100s...not expensive, good performers. The shocks on the truck now might still be ok, but they're probably getting bouncy...also the OEM valving, even on the TRD version, was pretty soft...dunno if that's what you want or not.

A tip that might save you a few bucks...you can use the same rotors, if they're in good shape. Just buy the same kind of pads you were running on the original calipers, just the correct part number (ie shape) for the new calipers.

Make sure your daughter learns good braking habits too . She'll be driving better than most guys I know ...but really, it'll help the brakes last longer & be there when they're needed most.
