You should.

The FSM states GL-4 or GL-5. Most people who don't do their own maintenance (and many who do) are probably driving around with GL-5 oil in their tranny, and you don't hear about an epidemic of Toyota transmissions eating synchros.

If you want to be on the safe side, run a GL-4 oil anyway. It won't hurt anything. I like Redline personally, and they have either MTL or MT-90 rated GL-4, or 75W90 Nonslip rated GL-5. I've been using 75W90NS for a while now, and my transmission is still alive.

GL-5 doesn't really matter. I'm running dino Valvoline 75W-90 right now, no complaints.

I use Amsoil GL-4 and it shifts very nice. That is what I will use from now on. Amsoil is all that I use on my truck.

Might try that next interval. Can't seem to find any decent synthetics at the local auto parts stores.. Mobil 1 gear oil is a little sketchy from what I've heard

Me too.. works great. I tried Redline MT-90 at first, and it worked great for about 6 months, and then shifting because less smooth after that... even though I didn't put that many miles on the new fluid. I switched it out for the Amsoil GL-4 gear oil in the tranny and transfer case and haven't looked back since.

gotta order Amsoil online as well...no stores carry it out here. have to go through a private dealer who sells it out of their garage, or buy it online...cheaper just to buy it online!

WTF are you smoking? Every Napa and Carquest around here carries Redline, and many local chains and independent shops as well.

Amsoil is carried by, um, err... the same guy trying to sell you prepaid legal! It might be decent oil, but it's just a fawking pyramid scheme...

There's a local dealer next to the CarQuest in town. It's the only one I've seen, and I just discovered it a couple weeks ago.

I haven't checked Napa or Carquest down here, but I'm pretty damn sure they don't carry it. I can check though. I know that Advance Auto Parts, O'Reilly's, and AutoZone do not carry it, because I've looked there. All they have is Mobil 1 (just started stocking it at AutoZone), Coastal, and Valvoline dino. O'Reilly's has Castrol synthetic and a couple of different blends.

I tried the Amsoil junk in the Tranny in my old 2000, it was so bad in the cold weather that I would have to shift from 1st to 3rd gear until the Truck warmed up.

Which Amsoil gear oil did you use?

I used the "Synthetic Manual Transmission and Transaxle Gear Lube (75W-90) API GL-4 (MTGQT)"

I've had my Amsoil in my truck for the past 2 winters and it's been awesome. We get some coldass winters here too.. some days it's between -2 to 5 degrees F in the morning when I leave for work.

yeah... I'm probably gonna get this. It seems like it would be great. The dino shit I have now is already getting sketchy and it's only gotten to about 40 degrees here.

well i noticed shifting into second required a substancial amount of force, much more than what i had in before (which i was undertain about...i bought it used). as well as downshifting into first....granted thats pretty standard across the board with taco's unless your at a dead stop. shifting into all other gears also seemed to take more work. when its colder out (cold for san diego....) its extremely noticable. and the weather we have here shouldn't affect it that much!

In the Cold with the Amsoil 75-90 I could not even get it into 2nd gear no matter how hard I tried to force it. After I drove about 10 Miles and it warmed up I was able to get it in 2nd, switched back to regular old Dino Oil and it shifted much better.

That's pretty much pretty standard with all cars that have a manual transmission. The best thing to do is rev match(in any gear really). Generally you only need first gear when you're at a dead stop or if towing something... even with the weakass 3RZ motor and slightly larger than stock tires.

does amsoil make a dino gear oil? Seems like it would be a good middle. or maybe an amsoil blend..

Not sure man... I'd just go with the full synthetic anyways. If you are curious as to what they sell, you can just look on their website and see what they offer for gear oils... they list all their products online.

Amsoil makes pretty damn good oil across the board.

when it gets below 45F i see very noticeable differences in shift effort into 2nd. any colder than that until the trans is warm I can double clutch before shifting to 2nd and that for whatever reason makes it go easier. I use amsoil, first time I added it I used the one called manual transmission fluid or whatever, couple months ago all I could get quickly (locally) was the 7590. First gear is just a bitch 90% of the time.

i am glad i came across this because my tranny has become a bitch to shift for the first 10 or 15 minutes of driving ever since i put quaker state 75w90 gl5 in it.

after reading through all of these posts i am having a hard time figuring out what i need.

it looks like i want gl4? what is dino oil?

i just want to be able to shift it without having to ram it into gears and without having to warm it up for 1/2 hour.
