may have found an axle last night. its a HP44 with drum brakes, so its a pre-1977 axle. i believe its from a '73-'75 ford and i hope so, because i think those had the 1/2" thick axle tube. im researching the numbers stamped on the axle tube today to see what i can find out on it. the numbers are: 10 22 5B4 603689 8

Doing a search on dana's sight resulted in nothing. I'm surprised they do not have it listed in their docs. http://www2.dana.com/pdf/XGI.pdf

brakes can be swapped out for discs, I believe...you're gonna need flat top knuckles anyway.

i think the tube is only 2.75" diameter.....yeah, im planning on going to chevy flat top knuckles for hi-steer and running discs anyways. it was 66" WMS to WMS, so i dont think ill have to shorten it

Well I finally got this axle out of the woods and into my garage but i am having a very hard time reading the BOM there is one number that I can barely read. But I am checking on spicer list and am coming up short. I believe the number is 610024 but there is no number listed. The bottom of the 4th number is the only thing I can read so it could be a 0,3,5,6,8,9 but when I research all of these in place of the 4th number it is not matching up. I know it is a ford axle because of the factory hubs. I dont know if it is a 44 or a 60 it seems pretty beefy.

the axle tube on a 44 will be smaller than a 60 also. if the one i found is a 3/8" thick tube im going to make a truss similar to the TnT truss ive seen for it.

I started digging into this housing and found something the looks out of place. I was hoping some one could take a look at this and tell me if there was damage done? It looks to me like a chunk of material is missing. I dont know how since the race sits up against it.[ATTACH]

all the research i did last night says the '76 is a 2.75" diameter tube and is 3/8" thick on the f150 and 1/2" thick on the f250....unless that's wrong. it went thru all the years from about '71 on.
what do the edges of that chunk look like??? are they irregulary shaped like a chunk cracked and came out??

It is too hard to tell if it is a break it is a very clean one. The bottom alomost has a perfect semi cirle to it. I ran a smalll screw driver over it and you can feel the texture but ont the inside these diffs it has texture every where. I am wondering if I can just pool up some weld to fill it in.

I doubt that that's damage... It has the same coloring as the rest of the inside of the housing. You need to check to see if it goes anywhere. Any Cracks around it? Any Chance you can get a closer pic with a little better lighting?
Regardless, I wouldn't fill it with weld... It'd difficult to weld to cast correctly, Unless you are a seasoned welder on Cast. I'd pour a little light oil down inside it, make sure it doesn't leak out the other side. If it doesn't. Run it as is. If it leaks, then you probably have other problems. |

started tearing down the axle last night....rusty bolts
. anyways, it just so happens mine is a '76 with drum brakes and the brackets are welded on instead of cast into the axle housing, which is good because the '76's were thicker housings than the later ones. gonna start a thread maybe on the build-up of it for those that may think of doing the same later.

It's not too detailed but, shows a pic of it pretty much complete and under the truck. I'm using Chevy outers and the WMS measurement was 65.75". With 2" spacers on each side, the overall WMS is 69.75". I think I still have the TR and DL in the garage. It's set-up to have DL attached to the TR. If I can find it and you are interested, let me know and I can get the measurements.

did some more cleaning on the axle last night and "shaved" the bottom of the housing so it wouldnt hang up on anything in reverse...just took cell phone pics.
